Martial Musings of a Hypnofighter #16: The Danger of Beginners
The more you train and master your discipline in BJJ/Luta or MMA, the less you enjoy sparring with beginners. You understand the risks of different positions, you’ve seen numerous injuries, and you know that force applied in the opposite direction can result in fractures. After spending hours on the mat, you’ve come to understand, sometimes through your own injuries, but also through logic and empathy, that certain actions can end very badly.
However, newcomers are filled with enthusiasm. For 90% of them, they just want to spar; the technical interest only comes when they’ve been beaten over and over. So, the beginner, full of desire and ego, wants to show during randoris that they are strong. Maybe they practiced a bit, maybe they were always the one winning against friends, perhaps they watch all the UFC fights and believe that techniques work through mimicry.
Then they face more experienced individuals, men and women who’ve devoted time to learning and sparring. Some are not seasoned fighters; they come to the academy for the camaraderie, fitness, and the joy of learning. Sometimes, beginners mishandle them, not necessarily defeating them, but gaining confidence. However, they fail to realize how many times they were dangerous: an elbow grazing the eyebrow, fingers near the eyes, or risky ankle attempts. When they encounter a seasoned practitioner who enjoys combat, they’re in for a lesson. Often, the experienced practitioner spars with educative correctness, taking care of others, the walls, and dangerous moves, « protecting » the unknown and hurtful mistakes of the other.
This attention that many higher belts pay can turn into a real problem for themselves. Taking into account not injuring the opponent, who lacks awareness or caution, opens the possibility of injuring oneself. And there’s nothing more frustrating. How many fighters have injured themselves protecting their opponent from errors caused by their partner’s lack of training? Despite explanations, an understanding of the dangers isn’t quite there yet. Unfortunately, I’ve also seen beginners suffer serious injuries in their first few months.
It’s disheartening to see motivated individuals unable to continue practicing quickly because they were unfamiliar with certain positions. But the worst is during submissions, when they’re not aware that their bodies aren’t invincible and that their flexibility has limits. That moment when the novice realizes too late that they should have tapped instead of wriggling around chaotically. It’s the first confrontation with the ego, refusing to submit simply to show that they can’t be subdued.
For me, training with beginners is challenging. Besides the lack of interest until they’ve grasped the basics, they’re more prone to injuries. Opting to spar with them always comes with a thought: I need to calm them down quickly, or it could lead to tricky situations to manage, both for them and for me.
And you, how do you feel about beginners at the dojo?
Take what is good and right for you. Be one Pank
