Martial Reflections of a Hypnofighter #109: Internet Techniques
There are a multitude of extraordinary techniques in BJJ, but even more variations thanks to Instagram. Our students see techniques exceptionally used in competitions and spend time repeating them, only to find that 90% of the time, they don’t work for them. It’s not that the technique is completely bad, but rather that its creator has a unique body type and technical background. That’s why we know that some techniques, although attractive, will require a lot of effort to master. From there to using them in randori or even in competition, there is a big gap.
For a teacher, it’s interesting to see students search for techniques that excite them. However, it’s important that this doesn’t distract them from learning the basics. Indeed, the more fundamental techniques are mastered, the easier it is to assimilate new techniques, especially those that seem suitable.
I have observed many trends and students trying to learn them. As social media only shows the highlights of these movements, a kind of fashion phenomenon sets in and everyone wants to study them. Yet, over time and with hindsight, I have rarely seen practitioners who have repeated these « original » techniques thousands of times use them in competition.
Even worse, by wanting to « follow » a trend without considering their own physical abilities and style, some have inflicted injuries on themselves, leading to unnecessary chronic pain. If you like certain fashionable techniques, choose those that suit you and that have proven themselves on the tatami in competition. This way, you will make the most of your training and energy.
